Introduzione A. Andreotti, A. Brunetto, G. Lanterna, B. Mazzei, A. Sansonetti Continua...
Abstract
Metallic oxalates on architectural surfaces are often present, with a deteriorating chromatic appearance, such as calcium oxalate. Frequently, their presence is also found on polychrome surfaces of both ancient and modern manufacture. The origin of these layers has been extensively studied and experimentally reproduced, and are often related in a specific chromatic area in relation to the type of metal pigment. The case study treated at the L'Aquila Academy of Fine Arts, was an oil painting on canvas covered by a whitish, opalescent patina, impairing the readability of the pictorial film. It was particularly fragile, thin and lacking of final varnish, probably due to previous particularly aggressive cleanings. The analysis found a calcium oxalate layer originated by a protein from albumin egg. After unsuccessful different cleaning tests by chelating agents and enzymes, organic solvents and water solutions, the Erbium laser at 2940 nm in very short modality achieved a good result. Chiudi |

Abstract
The intervention methodology developed for the removal of heterogeneous overlaid materials from the panel painting depicting the Holy Family – Galleria Palatina of Palazzo Pitti (Florence) – was identified based on the need to combine and coordinate chemical cleaning methods with physical cleaning techniques. This was necessary due to the numerous maintenance interventions carried out on the painting over time and because of the alteration of the paint layers, both original and dating to later interventions, caused by heat. The artwork had, in fact, been involved in an ancient fire and was later exposed to further heat (the dripping of boiling wax onto the paint surface). The cleaning process was monitored by a thorough diagnostic campaign led by the CNR STM of Perugia, which utilized scientific analyses both to characterize non-original substances and as a control tool to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention methodology. Applicazione laser Er:YAG e Nd:YAG per la pulitura di una croce dipinta del XIII secolo E. Cianca, I. Sinceri, F. Fumelli, M. Ioele, G. Priori, L. Pronti, E. Gorga, M. Romani, G. Viviani, M. Cestelli Guidi, G. Tranquilli Continua...
Abstract
The object of the contribution is the cleaning treatment for the removal of a thick and altered protein layer, in which was detected a large amount of calcium oxalates, by a tempera painted Cross from the Florentine context, attributed to the Master of Gagliano, dated to the 13th century. The cleaning of this layer was performed using laser instrumentation combined with chemical cleaning. In particular, laser Er:YAG (λ 2940 nm) Light Brush 2 by El.En. S.p.A. company was utilized for cleaning the whole painting surface, except for the background painted with azurite mixed with glue. In these area the laser used was Nd:YAG Thunder Compact by Quanta System S.p.A. of El.En. Group, set on the second harmonic (λ 532 nm). The complex intervention has been monitored both with the analytical techniques currently available at ICR scientific laboratories in Rome, as well as those resulting from cooperation with Frascati INFN-National Laboratories in the framework of the ARTEMISIA (ARTificial intelligence Extended-Multispectral Imaging Scanner for In-situ Artwork analysis) project. The employment of laser cleaning on easel paintings: contributions and overview
in LACONA and APLAR conferences I. Pecorelli, G. De Cesare Continua...
Abstract
This article presents a preliminary study based on APLAR (APplicazioni LAser nel Restauro) and LACONA (LAsers in the CONservation of Artworks) conference proceedings, focusing on the employment of laser cleaning techniques on easel paintings. It shows various laser systems employed, such as Nd:YAG, Er:YAG, and KrF excimer lasers, and their effect on different paint mediums including: oil, tempera, alkyd and nitrocellulose paint, acrylic and vinylic. The study highlights the fluence thresholds Fthr of these mentioned materials along with pulse durations and wavelengths needed for their effective cleaning, while minimizing the risk of damaging original paint layers. Additionally, the research examines laser removal of unwanted natural and synthetic varnishes, animal glue layers, coherent deposits and calcium oxalate layers. Fluence thresholds with the minimum and maximum values which can be safely employed in order to have a controlled cleaning of these unwanted substances are reported as well. Chiudi |

Abstract
The artworks subject of this intervention are fragments of reliefs and small sculptures of Gandhara art (1st and 5th centuries A.D), found at the site of Butkara I (Swat valley, Pakistan), during excavations by the Italian ISMEO mission in the early 1960s. These artifacts are currently located in the Museum of Oriental Art in Turin. These artworks are made of a particularly uneven, crumbly, and fragile stucco mixture with traces of colours, mostly red (red ochre). Recent researches on Gandharan stone and stucco sculptures are investigating the polychrome finishing of these artworks. All sculptures were subjected to XRF investigations, which revealed a composition of the stucco, the pigments and the background layer applied to regularize an uneven mixture and to create a preparation for painting layers. To determine the most correct cleaning method for these fragile artworks, it was decided to test the use of different laser for the cleaning of stucco mixture and polychrome layers, verifying the effects of photoablation in the optimal laser parameters and operating conditions, by using digital portable microscope, colorimetric and spectrophotometric analysis. Experimental SET-UP for the cleaning treatment of an Egyptian blue powdery painted
surface: Nd:YAG vs Yb doped-core fiber laser M. Cremonesi, F. Zenucchini, C. Ricci, T. Cavaleri, A. Re, T. Quirino, P. Buscaglia Continua...
Abstract
One of the most critical issues in the conservation of cultural heritage is the cleaning of powdery and water-sensitive polychrome surfaces: due to their severe loss of binder any chemical or mechanical cleaning is precluded. The case studies were two archaeological fragments of wooden coffins from Ancient Egypt, housed at the SABAP museum storerooms in Milan, Italy. Part of this work is the result of a master thesis in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage of the University of Turin in agreement with Centro Conservazione e Restauro 'La Venaria Reale' (SUSCOR-SAF). An experimental setup of mock-ups of Egyptian Blue pigment was designed to mimic the original materials and their critical state of preservation. The study proposes a combined methodology to remove selectively the dust depositions from the powdery free pigment, almost within the same layer. The tests included Nd:YAG 1064 nm and 532 nm in QS and LQS, as well as a Yb-doped core fiber laser at 1064 nm. The lasers were always used in combination with a micro-vacuum system to collect the ablated material for analysis. The cleaning was monitored by means of 3D microscopy, colorimetry and optical microscopy, along with an Imaging-based (VIS/VIL) analysis of the ablated material. Chiudi |

Abstract
This article presents the conservative and esthetical restoration of a wooden and polychrome statue from the 15th century, attributed to an artist from Abruzzo, which portrays an Announcing Angel; this sculpture comes from the deposits of the Museum of the Certosa di San Martino in Naples. The restoration of the sculpture has constituted the main object of the qualifying diploma for the profession of conservator, obtained in Accademia di Belle Arti of Naples. Before the restoration, the Announcing Angel was so ruined as to be considered 'a hardly evaluable artifact from the stylistic point of view'; the reason for this judgment must be found in the addition of consistent coatings of overpaintings and restoration materials throughout the time which intercurred between the original appearance and the present. The restoration that we intend to present is a 'restoration centered around rediscovery', which has had to deal with widely recast surfaces, altered by a thick layer of gypsum and by a blue repainting under which the original tunica had been smothered by several damages and harsh reworks. This restoration has once again brought light upon the original decoration in phytomorphic red lacca from the 15th century. The complete restoration of the polychrome wouldn't have been possible without the removal of an insoluble grey and opaque layer of casein glue which dulled the brightening effect of the red lacca. The aforementioned aim justified the use of laser technology as a mean to reach the present result. Through this article we intend to describe the operative solutions which have been applied throughout the treatment for removal of both a pigmented paint and a stubborn patina of casein glue, which would have been impossible to remove with any traditional method. The ablation trials have been performed with an Er:YAG laser at 2940 nm. The possibility to define the operative parameters has been ensured by several tests and results have also been verified thanks to the use of DinoLite, digital microscope. The variation of parameters has enabled the achievement of a balanced cleaning, without risk of endangering the pictorial film, with a safety that could not have been reached throughout the sole use of chemical methods.
beni culturali in legno policromo F. Zenucchini, C. Ricci, A. Piccirillo, P. Luciani Continua...
Abstract
Laser cleaning has gained prominence as an environmentally friendly and highly effective technology features, gradually replacing traditional cleaning methods such as mechanical and chemical processes, including on wooden surfaces [1-3, 15]. In the recent years, active fiber lasers (AFL) have emerged as a promising tool in the field of Cultural Heritage conservation, valued for their precision and speed. This paper presents a case study on the cleaning of a wooden surface from the Saint Uberto's Church (1716-1729) within the Castle of Venaria Reale, Turin, Italy, specially focused on the central and the two side wooden doors. To identify the most appropriate cleaning methodology, solvent-based technique were compared to AFL laser cleaning. Subsequently, three AFL systems - Infinito 100W, Infinito 300W and a prototype Smart 300W by El.En. Group - were tested. The study evaluated surface effects and optimized parameters such as power, frequency, pulse width and scan shape. A preliminary material characterization, performed using FTIR spectroscopy, identified an alkyd protective coating on the wooden doors, which had undergone chromatic alterations over the time due to the exposure to sunlight and environmental factors. Laser cleaning of soiling and maintenance layers on baroque wooden furnishings
of the Austrian National Library P. Kopp, V. Pintus, K. Sterflinger Continua...
Abstract
This work aimed to the selective removal of specific layers of dirt and layers of past conservation treatments from the surfaces of the wood furnishing of the Austrian National Library, without removing the different historical organic protective layer covering the wood. For this purpose, the active fiber Yb laser system (INFINITO 300) was used, emitting a wavelength of 1064 nm and operating in kHz frequency. After tests on mock-ups controlled with an IR camera (FLIRONE), different parts of the furnishing were cleaned with the selected parameters, without the removal of the organic binding material. The cleaning processes were filmed, and the outcome was documented on some cross-sectioned selected samples by optical microscopy (OM) with reflected visible and UV lights, which revealed the thickness of the dirt layer on the untreated sample and the structure and morphology of the cleaned samples surface. Additionally, the composition of organic materials as part of the historic surface finishing was determined by μ-FTIR-ATR and THM-Py-GC/MS. Chiudi |

Abstract
The Female head with diadem from Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze (MAF n. inv. 1643) is a bronze fragment of a Roman-era statue which was originally gilded. The statue draws inspiration from late-classical statuary models, in particular to those linked to the iconography of Artemide and/or Hera. The head was part of the collection of Cardinal Leopoldo de’ Medici and was acquired in 1672 from the Roman collection of Marchese Tarsi. It was originally identified as a portrait of Livia, the wife of Emperor Augustus. Following its acquisition, the head underwent multiple significant interventions driven by the evolving collecting trends of different eras. These interventions completely altered its appearance, to the point that its authenticity was questioned. The surface treatments that characterised its appearance for over a century were defined by the imitation of “excavation patinas” which lent objects a stronger archaeological quality, a trend that flourished between the late 19th and the first decades of the 20th century. Laser technology has gained increasing acceptance as an integral tool in restoration practices, including those archaeological artifacts with sensitive surfaces. It is often used in combination with more traditional methods and occasionally paired with state-of-the-art chemical formulations (polysaccharide gels like Agar or Gellan, PVA-Borax gels). These water-based gels are semi-rigid, elastic, absorbent, and entirely transparent. These characteristics permit their use as wetting agents for targeted irradiation. In this case, it allowed for the selective and carefully controlled removal of surface layers added during past interventions, with the objective of restoring and preserving the highly fragile ancient polychrome finishes, such as leaf gilding. At the same time, it was possible to maintain the morphology and textures of the corrosion patinas specific to archaeological copper alloys. Chiudi |

Using a homogenised Er:YAG laser beam to remove bronze paint from oil gilding G. Alabone Continua...
Abstract
This paper describes the application of an attenuated and homogenised Fotona (Dualis XS) Erbium:YAG laser beam to remove darkened 'bronze' paint repairs from oil gilding. The similar solubility parameters of media in the oxidised bronze paint and its underlying gilding meant the removal of this coating was not successfully achievable using solvents alone. The thinness of gold leaf (<1 μm) necessitates that the laser energy applied has a uniform exposure pattern. However, the concentric multi-ring beam spots delivered by Er:YAG lasers commonly used in conservation have uneven fluence and sharp outlines that can be problematic for aged, gilded surfaces. The homogeniser comprises a diffractive optical element and focusing lens, providing a fixed spot size of 3.5 mm at an optimum working distance of 65 mm beyond the end of its shortened handpiece. This delivers a more uniform exposure and softer outer edge, enabling the safe removal of oxidised bronze paint from aged oil gilding. Chiudi |

Abstract
The contribute presents the application of fiber laser methodology on wall paintings as part of the restoration work carried out on the large frescos of Villa San Marco in Castellammare di Stabia (Na). Villa San Marco is part of the Stabian Villas, buried during the eruption of 79AD, and was rediscovered in 1950 thanks to the bravery of prof. Libero D’Orsi who brought this majestic structure to light. Before him, only the Borboni had investigated the villa in the mid-18th century by digging tunnels which were then re-filled. The paintings are mostly attributable to the 1st, 3rd and 4th Pompeian style and the mosaic floors are decorated with geometric designs in black and white tiles. The frescoes involved in the restoration presented multiple critical issues. In addition to the superimposed materials, which from compositional analysis carried out appeared to be composed of layers of ash, there were both coherent and powdery surface deposits, oxalates, carbonates, calcite, salt efflorescence, altered waxes and products used in previous restorations, dating back to the 80s/90s, which prevented correct reading. The state of conservation of the restored environments highlighted different types of degradation caused not only by their different location, some of these being directly exposed to atmospheric agents, but also by the presence of different quantities and types of substances from previous restorations, altered in a non-homogeneous way. The cleaning was carried out differently based on the material to be removed or treated, and where traditional methods had not given satisfactory results, the use of laser technology was chosen. Preliminary tests were carried out on the various surfaces and polychromies to be treated, monitored with the aid of the optical microscope. The lasers used in the various tests were: Nd:YAG 'Smart Clean 2' (SFR 30-100 μs, λ 1064 nm); 'Infinite' fiber laser (LQS 100 ns, λ 1064 nm); Nd:YAG EOS1000 LQS (LQS 100 ns, λ 1064 nm); Er:YAG 'Ligth Brush 2' laser (Very Short 150 μs, λ 2940 nm). This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the combination of Nd:YAG lasers and the fiber laser for the removal of the layers such as ash or limestone Calcium carbonate and for the removal of thick and very weathered waxes on some portions of the fresco, combining chemical method sand Er: YAG laser.
Abstract
The present work aims to enlighten the intervention, which has allowed the unveiling of precious and unseen pictorial, decorative and figurative evidence on cubicle B5’s walls and vault in Sant’Efebo catacombs in Naples, dating back to the beginning of the V century. After the discovery of the catacomb, the wall-paintings had never undergone to any kind of cleaning intervention, to the point where it was fairly impossible to distinguish the shapes and the decorations which had originally been pointed out by the discoverer. These reasons pushed the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra to program a restoration which, in several occasions, has affected the ambulatory B1 between 2016-17, and the ambulatcrum B5 between 2018 and 2020. Throughout this experience, traditional handwork was used alongside with laser technology that it allowed to overcome the curtain of physical inaccessibility in which time and man had relegated the cubicle B5 for centuries. Carolingian detached wall painting from the convent of St. John in Mustair (CH):
development of a pilot intervention C. Martinucci, C. Leandri, A. Felici, N. Ellwanger Continua...
Abstract
The Swiss National Museum holds 28 wall paintings detached from the attic of the monastery church of St. Johann in Müstair (Canton of Grisons, Switzerland). Out of these 20 are strappi from the Carolingian cycle, while the other 8 are stacchi from the Romanesque one. In 2022, a pilot intervention was started on one Carolingian detached wall painting, during which two main tasks were tackled, the removal of the heavily altered coating that covers the entire painted surface and the removal of a thick oil-based infill from the canvas support. In both cases, the use of laser technology proved to be a crucial and useful tool, both in terms of its effectiveness and efficiency. The removal of the coating was possible by combining the laser operating with a QS pulse duration in the presence of auxiliary solvents, while the removal of the filler could only be achieved by irradiating the surface with laser using the LQS pulse regime.
Abstract
The complex decorative system of the 'Tomb of fishes and spikes' is made up of coloured plasters and stuccoes on cocciopesto preparation of yellow and red ochre, green earth, egyptian blue, black coal and brown earths, lime white. This system was damaged by the continuous process of solubilization and re-crystallization of the constitutive materials and soluble salts because of the Relative Humidity close to 100% and by the mechanical action of the roots penetrated from the calcarenite rocks. Due to these reasons plasters and stuccoes were heavily incomplete and covered by a thick layer of re-calcification and thick yellow-brown concretions of human origin. After cleaning attempts on samples of coloured plaster found in the excavation, by means of laser instruments (Nd:YAG, Q-Switched, named Thunder Compact by El.En. S.p.A.), all surfaces have been cleaned combining laser with other systems (ionexchange resins, hammer and chisel, then scalpel and/or microdrill). Chiudi |

Abstract
The restoration of Gaudenzio Ferrari's wall paintings in Santa Margherita Chapel of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Varallo (VC) concerned all the conservative aspects, nevertheless the complex cleaning represented the goal of the perfect success of the work. Diagnostic investigations using noninvasive and micro-invasive techniques and the study of the execution technique and the conservation history of the artefact have allowed us to develop an adequate intervention methodology. There is no information on the restorations carried out before the last century, but through the interpretation of graphic and photographic documents and the analytical knowledge of the superimposed materials it was possible to identify the substances that had seriously altered the painting layers. After careful cleaning, which involved the use of mixtures of supported organic solvents, the painting surface was still profoundly alterated. The choice to use Nd: YAG laser instrumentation immediately seemed to be the most suitable solution for removing the almost insoluble overlays, in the respect of the very delicate original material. Based on the different execution and factor of deterioration, two instruments with different wavelengths were used. The Q-switched Thunder Art used in the second harmonic green light (λ 532 nm) allowed us to work safely on a paint film where important residues of azurite were hidden by an adhered layer of overpainting. The EOS QS, Nd:YAG, λ 1064 nm in Q-Switched mode was used with different pulse parameters and energies, depending on the painting area, allowing to remove both the thinner and thicker layers, without affecting the original material. The choice to use laser technology allowed us to work in a gradual, selective and controlled way, allowing for the conservation of the artefact and offering the possibility to know important elements of the masterpiece.
pittorica e sugli stucchi. Breve storia di un recupero... atteso A. Cerreta, U. Santamaria, L. Baldelli, F. Persegati, F. Morresi Continua...
Abstract
The pilot project described here examined the surfaces of the west wall of the sixth bay, and the adjacent pilasters, of Raphael's Loggia. These present 'fresco' and 'secco' wall paintings were enriched by stucco reliefs. The different execution techniques used, combined with the microclimate, generated an extremely serious state of preservation, which led to the loss of most of the figurations. In addition, the mineralization of organic substances, applied as consolidating and protective agents, has produced tenacious layers of oxalate that cloud the pictorial layers. The identification of the most suitable cleaning methodology was done by testing different types of lasers in relation to traditional cleaning methods. In the end, the 'Infinito' fiber laser was selected for its high selectivity without interfering with the original support: the possibility of working at low powers combined with the great versatility of the beam emission modes allowed gradual selection in cleaning, enabling the focused removal of surface extraneous substances. Comparison tests were also performed on the II span. The cleaning procedures were verified with scientific investigations before, during, and after the work. Chiudi |

LASERING-PH: Sustainable cleaning of Pictorial Heritage. Optimization of laser
ablation processes L. Andrès-Herguedas, D. Jimènez-Desmond, J. Santiago Pozo-Antonio Continua...
Abstract
In the current context of the global warming, atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases contribute to soiling, deposits and formation of more complex crusts on ancient wall paintings that compromise their stability and prevent their correct reading. Methods used to remove these deposits must preserve the structural and chemical integrity of the pictorial layer. From the scientific literature, wavelength, frequency and pulse duration are parameters that significantly influence the response of the material when applying laser cleaning. Studying what happens to raw pigments and binders and to the whole paintings (before and after accelerated ageing to simulate soiling) when they are irradiated with different lasers is the focus of the LASERING-PH project. Lasers with different pulse duration operating at 355 nm (a ns Nd:YVO4), 1040 nm (a fs Spirit system), 1064 nm (three ns Nd: YAG lasers with different modes: Q-switched, Long Q-Switched and Short Free Running modes and a ns Yb-doped fibre laser) and 2940 nm (two μs Er:YAG lasers) were selected. Sulphide pigments (orpiment and cinnabar) were the most susceptible to laser irradiation, showing intense colour changes even at minimum fluence for most of the lasers. However, lead white was the most resistant pigment, with colour changes hardly noticeable by an experienced human eye. Keywords: cultural heritage conservation; laser cleaning; pigment; tempera; cave painting; pulse duration; frequency; fluence. Chiudi |

Abstract
It can happen that works of art, often contemporary art, have been subjected to heavy and disfiguring manipulation, especially when they have not been recognised as such or have been undervalued: this is the case with works that artists give as gifts to friends or acquaintances and that sometimes suffer unfortunate fates. This is the case of Diario di Renato a work Maria Lai had executed as a wedding gift for a couple of friends: it is a work made of rectangles of unbleached cotton fabric, embroidered in black with a sewing machine to simulate the pages of a diary written in minute handwriting and fixed only in a few stitches, leaving the lower parts free. This floating effect caused apparently concern by the previous owner, therefore at some unspecified time, the entire work had impregnated with synthetic glue, strongly attaching the sheets to the underlying canvas. The adhesive had saturated the canvas, giving it a darker, almost transparent appearance, and had also captured and retained particulate matter, accentuating its greyish, uneven appearance. The work left for the United States in this condition: colleagues were involved in the restoration work, who mechanically dismantled all the pages, while attempts at cleaning were unsuccessful. The work returned disassembled to Italy, where, on the basis of what had been done previously, we carried out further tests, sampling and analysis of the used adhesive and tests with a Thunder Compact Nd: YAG QS laser. Laser tests with both harmonics (λ 532 nm and 1064 nm) provided by the machine gave a more advanced cleaning result than the American attempts, but not yet satisfactory. Thanks to the positive assessment of the solubility of the black dye, it was possible to embark on the path of mixed intervention, alternating solvent and/or detergent applications and laser ablation sessions. Once again, the combined and alternating application of the different methodologies was truly effective where neither the laser alone nor the single action of solvents and detergents, nor their application in solution, emulsion or gel had produced a satisfactory result. The laser ablation was repeated many times, until a truly acceptable result was achieved, both from an aesthetic point of view, removing the yellow and grey component from the ground of the fabric, and from a functional point of view, restoring softness to the cotton fabric. Another case of inappropriate domestic handling involved three terracotta plates by Lucio Fontana, modelled and fired in Albisola at Tullio d’Albisola's workshop and partially engobed. The plates had always been cleaned in a domestic manner, with household products, and rinsed with unpurified water. If in the areas treated with engobe the cleaning did not present any particular problems with the application of mild, pH-neutral detergents, the case of the areas where the terracotta was exposed was different, as the previous cleaning with water had caused the penetration of dirt deposits into the porosity of the material, making it partially consistent with the matter of the work. A further problem was visible on one of the plates, due to the evident use of strong, caustic cleaning agents that had created lighter and very pronounced halos on the terracotta. Discarding wet or aqueous methods also for reasons of time, as the works were to leave within a few days for an overseas exhibition, the choice immediately fell on laser technology. Repeated passages of spots (1cm. diameter) with a wavelength of 1064 nm, low frequencies (2 Hz) and low energy, constantly of the minimum value of 0,045 J, after many hours of irradiation, achieved a truly satisfactory result. The surface was processed dry, without the need to moisten. In this second case, laser technology was decisive from a conservation point of view and decidedly competitive compared to traditional methods from the point of view of timing and resulting in financial savings.
Abstract
Laser cleaning has gained increasing acceptance and significant improvements in recent years. Lasers are used to remove carbon deposits while preserving the original historic surface and maintaining the so-called “ancient” patina of the stone. Studies indicate that, for degraded stones that are difficult to treat with traditional systems, it is possible to employ self-limiting procedures by laser, which do not require direct mechanical or chemical contact. During cleaning, the restorer retains full control, allowing removal of material and reduction of surface roughness. The laser tool (Nd:YAG QS, LQS, and SFR), unlike other methodologies, allows for non-contact cleaning and discrimination of dirt levels by photons. This study examines the action of time on a stone surface 36 years after cleaning work on two 17th-century Heraldic Coats of Arms in the ancient courtyard of BO’ University in Padua. Both coats of arms, made of Nanto sandstone (granular in appearance with inclusions of marine residues, defined as slightly clayey organogenic limestone), were treated with different techniques: one by means of Nd:YAG, QS 1064 nm laser, the other by mechanical cleaning using Wulsag micro aero-abrasive with 440 mesh Al2O3 powder. Analytical observations were performed by Cross Section, SEM microscopy, mean roughness analysis, and grazing light. The results of these investigations were compared with those of the first campaign in 1997 and the second in 2023, taking samples from the same areas and using the same procedure and analytical instrumentation.
Abstract
This paper presents the comparative study of cleaning methods carried out during the restoration of a plaster statue named Vergine Addolorata. All over the surface of the statue there were multiple coatings that have been investigated with an analytical campaign using XRF and FTIR and through stratigraphy analysis.Tests for the removal of these overlapping coatings were conducted on mock-ups with solvent based methods and five different lasers. After this investigation campaign the active fiber Yb laser (Infinito 300W of El. En. Group) was selected as the most appropriate cleaning method. The coatings were removed respecting the morphological and optical features of the plaster, as confirmed with the observation with optical microscope and 3D digital microscope. The colorimetric measurements carried out on the statue confirm that the plaster has not undergone any chromatic change. The cleaning was carried out varying the energy, the impulse length and the dimension and the length of the laser beam spot. Chiudi |

Abstract
The object studied in this contribution is the Neo-Attic marble crater from Pisa, characterised by a refined low-relief decoration representing the Dionysian procession. The previous interventions to which the work has been subjected include the application of cement mortar on the internal surface, which damaged the work both from a conservation point of view, by using materials not compatible with the constituent materials, and aesthetically, by obliterating the original internal surface. The presence of cement prompted the search for operative methods, alternative to traditional ones, for its removal. Cleaning tests were conducted at this purpose using two different laser instruments: the Nd:YAG Thunder Art, in Q-Switched mode, and the Nd:YAG EOS QS, in Short Free Running mode. The operating method involved the combined use of the two lasers, which allowed the cement to be removed, guaranteeing a selective and gradual procedure with total respect for the original surface.
Abstract
The following work, conducted as part of a Master’s Degree thesis in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, is about the study and the restoration of a plaster cast depicting the marble architrave of the church of Saint Benedict in Brindisi. It was decided to experiment the laser technology, so as to act in a selective and controlled way in the removal of extraneous materials to the surface. Two lasers using a Nd:YAG source were used (models EOS 1000 SFR and EOS 1000 LQS). In addition, the Nd:YAG Thunder Art laser was also tested. It was decided to use the fluid Agar gel as an intermediary medium between the surface of the artefact and the laser beam. Numerous cleaning tests were carried out on the plaster cast, comparing the different parameters of the lasers used and the different times of application of the fluid gel. In this way it is possible to achieve a level of cleanliness that is as homogeneous as possible while respecting the original patina of the plaster cast. Chiudi |

murali, antichi disegni rinvenuti sugli stucchi C. Giovannone, C. Balsi, C. Guizzardi, E. Panella Continua...
Abstract
Since 2019, the ICR has been working on the decorated surfaces inside the church of Santa Marta al Collegio Romano. Restoration started from the counter-façade and the vault of the first bay and are now going on in the apse and in the third bay. The aim of the restoration project, carried out mainly as part of the SAF’s training activity, with students from Rome and Matera, and with the aid of external restoration companies, is to bring to light the seventeenth-century facies of the church. Its decorations are in fact hidden by soiling, whitewash and overpaint, which alter the correct tonal values among the various artistic artefacts that make up the rich baroque apparatus of white and golden stucco reliefs and statues, frescoes, tempera decorations faking golden stucco. Among all the methodologies used during the intervention, laser photoablation has proven to be a valid alternative to chemical cleaning for the resolution of peculiar issues, such as the cleaning of the golden stucco and the sanguine and graphite sketches, found on the intrados of the apse arch during the restoration. This discovery was also the opportunity to undertake a research on the use of menthol as a temporary protective during laser irradiation. Santa Marta also hosts, as part of the Restauro Aperto project, other works of art such as Domenichino’s frescoes detached in 1817 by Pietro Palmaroli and now preserved in the Hall of Signatures of Palazzo Farnese. Particularly, during the restoration of the second panel of the three, depicting the Death of Adonis, laser cleaning was used to remove a large nineteenth-century tempera reconstruction. Chiudi |

Abstract
The Slaughter of the Niobids by Giovan Battista Foggini and the Fall of Giants by Carlo Marcellini are two terracotta reliefs, part of the collection of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, commissioned in 1674 by Cosimo III, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The artworks are the only two terracotta objects within the museum collection, beyond the huge series of semi-precious stones artifacts characterizing it. The two reliefs have been restored more than once throughout their conservation history. The last two interventions, carried out by the Opificio, are documented in the restoration records kept in our archive and date back to 1977 and 1993. During these restoration projects, various kinds of protective films were applied over the surface, in addition to waxes and pigments and lacunae were filled with different types of materials. When the two reliefs where displaced from the main staircase of the Opificio to its Museum, we decided to carry out a new cleaning intervention, above all to remove the dust deposited over time and then incorporated into the wax layer applied in the 1990s. In an attempt to remove all the overlaid heterogeneous materials we tested different mixtures of solvents and chelating agents supported on gels but we have had to accept the evidence of unsuccessful results. Only by combining chemical cleaning with laser ablation we finally were able to clear the surface from all the products that had been added over the years and rediscover the original patina. Chiudi |
